Onshape Free
Both tools use constrained parametric sketches, so dimensions and constraints drive the shape of your model. Change a dimension and the model updates. Sketch skills transfer well between the two tools, so time spent learning constraints is never wasted.
For 3D modeling and 3D CAD work, both tools build parts from constrained sketches and parametric features, similar to SolidWorks. A sketch often starts with a rectangle, circle, or line profile.
Both tools build parametric assemblies from parts. Onshape adds managed in-context editing, which lets you change a part in the context of a moving assembly while references update predictably. That helps when parts must fit together in motion. Assembly tools in both programs handle parts, joints, and motion.
Fusion assemblies sit in the same environment as design, simulation, and CAM. That matters for small teams, because one seat can carry a part from assembly to toolpath without exporting files between programs. Common commands include extrude, revolve, fillet, and chamfer in both tools.
Both tools produce dimensioned drawings that stay synced with the model. Onshape drawings sync with parts, assemblies, and the bill of materials in the cloud. Change the model and the drawing follows. Each CAD model update flows through to its drawing automatically. Visualization tools include rendering and shaded views for design reviews.
Fusion offers automated drawings in the full subscription. Personal use has limited 2D documentation and drawings, so hobbyists should expect simpler drawing output unless they upgrade. Switching between modeling and drawings feels seamless in both tools.
Fusion sheet metal tools cover bends, unfolds, flanges, corner reliefs, and sheet metal parameters. The Manufacturing Extension adds flat pattern documentation with 2D drawings and DXF files for cutting.
Onshape sheet metal supports flattening, extruding, and thickening, plus sheet metal forms such as louvers, bridge lances, slot embosses, extrudes, and punches. You can also build a custom forms library for repeat work. Generative design features vary by plan, so check paid tiers if you need them.
Fusion includes CAM in the base subscription, and the Manufacturing Extension or the $2,040 Manufacturing bundle adds advanced 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis milling, turn-mill work, nesting, fabrication, probing, and deburr. Post-processors are free and fully editable, so you can match your own machines. Both tools pack powerful features, but paid tiers unlock the deepest ones.
For a machine shop, that depth matters. One Fusion seat can take a part from model to machine code, including 5-axis work, without buying a second CAM system. That is the main reason manufacturers often pick Fusion first. It suits mechanical design work that ends in machined parts. Add-ins extend both tools with niche features for specific jobs.
CAM Studio is included with Onshape Professional, Enterprise, and Education Enterprise plans. It is not included with Standard, Free, or Student and Educator accounts. It covers 2.5-axis and 3-axis machining with adaptive toolpaths, in-process stock models, and machine simulation.
Multi-axis work waits for CAM Studio Advanced, which Onshape lists as coming soon with 4-axis, 3+2-axis, and 5-axis support. CAM Studio also does not run in the native mobile apps yet, and part changes do not update toolpaths automatically, so you must version the part and regenerate.
Send a STEP file for solid geometry plus a dimensioned drawing for tolerances, finishes, and threads. STEP is the safest neutral handoff because it preserves solid geometry across CAD systems. STL only suits 3D printing, since it carries mesh data with no editable features.
If you want a shop to quote your part, our 数控加工服务 team works from STEP files and drawings. For aluminum brackets, housings, and plates, see our aluminum CNC machining service
Fusion offers a gentler start for most beginners, with structured fundamentals courses and modeling tutorials from Autodesk. The desktop layout will also feel familiar if you have used Inventor or AutoCAD before. Its user interface feels familiar to desktop CAD users. Both tools group sketch and solid commands in a toolbar at the top. Basic design work needs only sketches, solids, and drawings in either tool.
Onshape opens instantly in a browser with online training included even in the free tier. The modeling itself is straightforward, but the document, version, and branch system takes time to learn if you come from file-based CAD. Learning Onshape takes time mainly for its document system, not its sketch tools. Neither interface feels clunky once you learn its layout. Either CAD software rewards practice with its tutorials and community.
Onshape education plans are free. Students get unlimited private documents at a Standard level, while educators get simulation, classes, and assignments at a Professional level, with watermarked documents. Fusion education is also free for qualifying students and educators, with full CAD, CAM, and CAE.
Device access decides many classrooms. Onshape runs on any web-enabled device, so a Chromebook works fine for student CAD. Fusion needs a Windows or Mac install, so it does not fit a Chromebook-only classroom. Onshape and Autodesk Fusion both offer education plans for students and teachers.
Moving a model between tools is easy. Moving the design intelligence behind it is not. Use this section to pick the right format for the job. PTC also sells Creo, a separate desktop CAD tool outside this comparison.
Use it for |
| STEP | Solid geometry, plus face color in Onshape imports | Finished parts, shop handoffs, moving between tools |
| IGES | Surfaces and solids; an older standard | Legacy files when STEP is not available |
| STL | Mesh triangles only; no editable features | 3D printing and mesh reference |
| OBJ | Mesh with shading data; no editable features | 3D printing, rendering, and mesh reference |
| DXF | 2D profiles, sketches, and flat patterns | Laser cutting, waterjet profiles, flat patterns |
| DWG | 2D drawings | Drawing exchange |
STEP is the safest exchange format for finished parts. Onshape imports STEP AP203, AP214, and AP242, and lists Parasolid as its preferred import format. For most moves between Fusion and Onshape, STEP preserves solid geometry cleanly.
Either CAD program opens STEP files for shop handoffs.
STL and OBJ carry mesh data only, meaning triangles with no parametric features. Onshape imports both as view and reference meshes that you cannot edit. Use them for 3D printing or visual reference, never as your master model.
DXF and DWG carry 2D geometry such as profiles, sketches, and drawing content. They suit laser cutting profiles, waterjet work, and flat patterns. They do not carry a 3D parametric model, so never use them to move a finished 3D part.
Parametric history, constraints, and feature trees never survive a neutral format. The receiving tool gets a solid or a mesh, not the recipe that built it. Keep the native file as your master and expect to rebuild features if you switch tools for good.
Fusion needs a Windows or Mac install with at least 8 GB of RAM, a dedicated graphics card, and 10 GB of free storage. It also needs a fast, reliable internet connection, and offline mode still requires a reconnect every 2 weeks.
Cost climbs with capability. Advanced CAM and simulation sit behind extensions or the $2,040 and $2,190 bundles. Personal use is non-commercial with 10 active documents and limited CAM, drawings, import and export types, and forum-only support.
Onshape needs an internet connection because it runs entirely in a browser, so there is no offline modeling. The free tier also makes every document public, which rules it out for private or client work. Browser tools depend on latency, so a slow connection hurts modeling.
CAM is the weak spot for machinists today. CAM Studio is limited to Professional and Enterprise plans, covers 2.5-axis and 3-axis work, and multi-axis support is still coming. It also does not run in the native mobile apps yet.
Pick Fusion for personal use. It is free desktop CAD and CAM for non-commercial projects, as long as you stay under $1,000 in yearly revenue and within 10 active documents. Pick Onshape Free only if you are happy for every document to be public. Fusion 360’s strength is desktop CAM depth, while Onshape’s strength is live collaboration.
Pick Fusion. The structured courses, familiar desktop layout, and free personal tier make the first month easier. Onshape is also learnable, but its document, version, and branch system adds concepts that beginners must absorb alongside modeling.
Pick Fusion if budget and CAM depth matter most, starting at $680 per year. Pick Onshape Standard at $1,500 per user per year if remote collaboration, private documents, and zero IT overhead matter more than 5-axis machining.
Both CAD solutions suit small teams, so test the free tiers first.
Pick Fusion if you want deep CAD, CAM, and CAE in one seat at a lower price. Pick Onshape Professional if team data management, release control, and real-time collaboration matter more to your work than 5-axis CAM.
For product development and product design reviews, either tool handles assemblies, drawings, and versioned releases.
Pick Onshape Enterprise for large teams that need single sign-on, analytics, Arena PLM connections, guest and light users, and priority support. Smaller teams with formal release needs can stop at Professional for $2,500 per user per year.
Enterprise plans add a connector for Arena PLM and advanced admin controls.
Pick Onshape Education for classroom flexibility, with free student and educator plans, private student documents, and CAD on any device including Chromebooks. Pick Fusion education if your course needs full CAM and CAE depth on Windows or Mac.
To compare Onshape fairly, test both free tiers on the same small project.
The hobbyist license renews each year for qualifying non-commercial users.
Both tools aim for a user-friendly start with tutorials and templates.
