Overview: What is CNC Turning? How CNC Turning Works

CNC turning is a subtractive process ideal for producing cylindrical or spherical components with high accuracy. In this process, the workpiece is clamped in a spindle and rotated while a stationary cutting tool shapes it to the desired geometry.
Using programmed G-Code, raw stock is loaded into the chuck of the lathe spindle. As the spindle rotates, fixed cutting tools perform operations such as facing, threading, knurling, drilling, boring, and taper turning. Once complete, the finished part is separated from the stock and prepared for post-processing.
This automation allows CNC lathes to repeat operations efficiently with minimal setup time, ensuring consistent accuracy and cost-effectiveness across production runs.

Polishing

Polishing smooths the surface, providing a high-gloss finish that improves both appearance and resistance to wear.

Anodizing

This process adds a protective oxide layer to metal surfaces, increasing corrosion resistance and enhancing aesthetic appeal.

Bead Blasting

Bead blasting involves spraying fine beads onto the surface to create a smooth, matte finish with a uniform texture.

Electroplating

Electroplating adds a thin metal coating to a surface, offering enhanced corrosion resistance, wear protection, and improved conductivity.

Lapping

Lapping is a precision process that improves surface flatness and smoothness, reducing surface roughness for high-tolerance applications.

Shot Peening

Shot peening involves bombarding the surface with small spherical media, improving fatigue resistance and reducing stress concentrations.

Explore Our CNC Turning Process at TUOWEI

CNC turning is a precise manufacturing process where a rotating workpiece is shaped using a stationary cutting tool. TUOWEI specializes in providing high-quality CNC turning services that deliver exceptional precision and efficiency.

Here’s how CNC turning works at TUOWEI:

Design and Setup

The first step is designing the part, either from a 3D CAD model or customer specifications. We use advanced design software to ensure the part will meet the exact dimensions and requirements. Once the design is finalized, the machine is programmed to follow a specific sequence of movements.

Material Selection

We offer a wide range of materials to choose from, including metals, plastics, and composites. Common materials used in CNC turning at TUOWEI include aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and titanium. Our material selection process ensures that each component has the right mechanical properties for its intended application.

Loading the Workpiece

The selected material is securely clamped onto the CNC lathe, where it is rotated at high speeds, often ranging from 500 to 3,000 RPM depending on the material and the desired surface finish.

Cutting Operations

As the workpiece rotates, the stationary cutting tool begins to remove material according to the programmed design. Various cutting techniques such as facing, turning, and threading are used to achieve the desired shape. The cutting tools are carefully selected based on the material type to ensure smooth and efficient operation.

Monitoring and Adjustments

Throughout the turning process, the CNC system constantly monitors the machine’s performance to ensure that the process is running smoothly. Adjustments are made automatically to ensure precision is maintained, and any potential issues are addressed before they affect the quality of the part.

Post-Processing

After the turning operation, parts may undergo further processes such as deburring, polishing, or coating to achieve the final finish. Our quality control team conducts rigorous inspections at each stage to ensure every part meets the highest standards of accuracy and surface finish.
