How CNC Milling Works

Controlled by G-Code generated through CAM software, CNC mills direct the cutting tool’s movements, speeds, depths, and feed rates to achieve the desired shape. Depending on the number of axes, the process can handle anything from simple profiles to complex geometries. Unlike CNC routers, which keep the workpiece fixed, CNC milling may move both the cutting head and the workpiece, offering greater versatility. This makes CNC milling a preferred solution for producing high-precision parts across industries.

Surface Finishes for CNC Milling

These are some surface finishing techniques that can be applied to ensure high-quality results:

Sanding

Sanding smooths the surface, removing burrs and imperfections, while preparing the material for painting or coating.

Brushing

Brushing involves using a rotating wire brush to create a uniform textured surface, often used for stainless steel or aluminum.

Electropolishing

This technique uses electrical currents to polish metal surfaces, enhancing both the appearance and corrosion resistance of stainless steel components.

Chemical Polishing

Chemical polishing removes surface irregularities using chemicals, offering a smooth finish on complex geometries that are difficult to reach mechanically.

Vibratory Finishing

Vibratory finishing involves placing parts in a vibrating container with abrasive media to smooth out rough surfaces, ideal for small and intricate parts.

Thermal Spraying

Thermal spraying coats a surface with a layer of melted material, improving surface hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance

Our Step By Step Process Of CNC Milling at TUOWEI Precision

At TUOWEI, the CNC milling process begins with understanding the client’s requirements. Our team of experts collaborates with clients to ensure that every detail of the design is accurate and feasible for manufacturing. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the process:

Design Phase

The process begins with a 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of the part or component. This model is shared with our team, where it is analyzed for manufacturability, ensuring that all tolerances and specifications are within achievable limits.

Tool Path Creation

Once the design is finalized, our team uses advanced CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate a tool path. This step ensures that the CNC machine knows the precise movements required to cut the material.

Material Setup

The material, whether it’s titanium, aluminum, or plastic, is securely placed in the CNC milling machine. Tuowei uses high-quality raw materials to ensure that every part meets the required mechanical properties and surface finish.

Machining

The CNC machine begins the milling operation. The cutting tools move along the designated axes (usually X, Y, and Z) to remove material from the workpiece. With our multi-axis CNC machines, we can achieve highly complex geometries in a single setup, reducing the need for rework or additional steps.

Inspection

After machining, each part is thoroughly inspected for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and overall quality. Our quality control team uses advanced measuring instruments like CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machines) to ensure each part meets precise specifications.

Post-Processing

Depending on the requirements, additional processes like polishing, anodizing, or coating may be applied to achieve the final look and functionality of the part.

The precision of the CNC milling process ensures that even the most intricate parts are produced to tight tolerances, with accuracy levels typically within ±0.005 mm. This allows us to produce high-quality components that meet stringent industry standards.

Technology Used in CNC Milling at TUOWEI

TUOWEI invests in state-of-the-art CNC milling technology to ensure optimal performance and the highest quality results. Here are some of the key technologies used in our CNC milling services:

Multi-Axis CNC Machines

We use multi-axis CNC milling machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machines, to produce highly complex parts with intricate features. The 5-axis capability allows for greater flexibility, enabling us to work on more challenging geometries and reduce setup time.

High-Speed Spindles

Our high-speed spindles allow for faster cutting speeds and improved surface finishes. With speeds up to 40,000 RPM, we can efficiently machine materials, such as titanium and aluminum, with precision.

Live Tooling

Live tooling allows us to perform multiple operations, such as drilling, tapping, and milling, without changing tools. This reduces cycle times and enhances productivity.

Automated Tool Changers

Our CNC machines are equipped with automated tool changers, ensuring smooth transitions between different tools, increasing operational efficiency and reducing machine downtime.

CAD/CAM Software

We use industry-leading CAD and CAM software to create tool paths and simulate the machining process. This ensures that every part is machined to perfection before the actual cutting begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

CNC Milling

  • What is Tool Offset in CNC Milling?

In CNC milling, a tool offset is the adjustment applied to compensate for the cutting tool’s length and diameter. This calibration ensures the tool cuts precisely in relation to the workpiece, preventing dimensional errors. By setting accurate offsets, machinists establish the correct machining start point, guaranteeing that parts meet exact specifications. Proper tool offsets are essential for maintaining accuracy, consistency, and high-quality results throughout the milling process.

  • What’s the difference between CNC milling and CNC routing?

While both use computer-controlled cutting, they serve different purposes.
CNC Milling: Built for high-precision machining of metals and hard materials, capable of producing intricate parts with tight tolerances.
CNC Routing: Designed for softer materials like wood, plastics, and composites. Routers operate at higher speeds and are better for cutting large sheets where ultra-high precision isn’t required.
In short, milling prioritizes accuracy and complexity, while routing emphasizes speed and large-format material handling.

  • What’s the difference between CNC milling and CNC turning?

Both CNC milling and turning are subtractive processes, but they differ in operation.
CNC Milling: The workpiece remains stationary while the cutting tool moves across multiple axes, making it ideal for complex parts with slots, contours, and holes.CNC Turning: The workpiece rotates while the tool stays fixed, making it more efficient for cylindrical components like shafts, bolts, and rings. Milling is best for complex shapes, while turning excels in producing round parts quickly and efficiently.

  • What are your CNC milling capabilities?

TUOWEI Precision provides comprehensive CNC milling solutions, handling parts up to 4000 x 1500 x 600 mm and as small as 5 x 5 x 5 mm. We work with metals, plastics, and composites, achieving tolerances as tight as ±0.01 mm on 5-axis projects. Lead times range from 3–7 days for simple parts to 7–14 days for complex geometries. Additional services like surface finishing, heat treatment, and inspection ensure every part meets the highest standards.

  • What kinds of CNC milling machines does TUOWEI have?

At TUOWEI Precision, we utilize a full range of CNC milling machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis, and advanced 5-axis systems, to meet diverse project requirements.

    • 3-Axis CNC Milling: Ideal for straightforward operations, handling cutting tasks along the X, Y, and Z axes.
    • 4-Axis CNC Milling: Adds a rotational axis for more complex geometries, enabling efficient multi-sided machining.
    • 5-Axis CNC Milling: Offers unmatched precision and flexibility, machining intricate parts with complex shapes and angles in fewer setups.
This range allows us to deliver parts with exceptional accuracy, speed, and consistent quality.
